If you’re a member of the armed forces, it can be frustrating to look around and see few military auto insurance options. You might ask yourself why there aren’t more discounts and why nobody seems to have a problem with this. First things first – you’re not crazy.
Insurance as an industry has been around for nearly a thousand years. It predates our country, as well as most countries in existence today. Regulations surrounding insurance policies are tight, and they have been that way for a very long time.
When it comes to auto insurance, laws are made for the populous rather than the individual. It can leave you feeling left out at a time when you’d rather be appreciated, but the good news is that all the discounts on the market are still up for grabs. With the right research and comparing military auto insurance, you can find a great policy at a great rate.
Auto Insurance Laws
Insurance isn’t an industry that’s micromanaged by the federal government. Each state sets its own laws and regulations regarding liability limits and rules of fault. Each state decides which coverage selections are mandatory or optional. Due to these discrepancies, auto insurance premiums can vary drastically from state to state.
If you’re in the military, these laws can feel especially tricky. If you’re deployed or stationed in another state, you may have to make changes both in registration and insurance depending on how long you’re gone and where you’re going. Learn more about military auto insurance laws here.
It should be simple, but the fact remains that how military auto insurance is handled also varies from one state to the next. The good news is that any qualified insurance agent or team member handling your area will be well-versed in what you need to do, when, and why. Insuring a Car While in Another State
Should you obtain insurance in another state if you’re stationed away from home? Largely, it depends on two factors – the state in which you’ll be residing and the length of time you’ll stay. Even then, you can be granted several options.
Many service members choose to leave their vehicles with friends or loved ones to be looked after while they’re away. When this happens, the vehicle is often kept in storage, resulting in a short mileage discount in the interim.
Some service members bring their vehicles, and if you’re staying in a state which doesn’t require you to change your insurance, then your vehicle can remain both registered and insured in your home state. In the event of an incident, your hometown insurer will still cover you. Note: you’ll still need to be aware of liability laws in your resident state to ensure you don’t get sued.
If the move looks longer term and you don’t have anyone back home to look after your ride, it could be time to move both the registration and the insurance. Fortunately, our armed forces try not to leave anybody high and dry. There’s often someone local to advise you on which is most sensible. Read more about auto insurance coverage options for veterans.
Auto Insurance During Deployment
Several military insurance companies have adapted over time to understand that when you’re deployed, you’re not driving around your hometown. They offer emergency deployment auto insurance discounts. Some insurers offer more discounts as well. Take a look:

Reinstating Auto Insurance After Deployment
The rules which apply here can vary. If you get back home on a Monday and you forget to call your insurance company to tell them and you cause an incident on Tuesday, technically they have every right to fiscally leave you high and dry. They probably won’t, but it’s not worth the chance.
Once you’re back, give your insurance company a heads-up. It may feel tempting to ride around with your rate slashed, but it’s not worth the risk of having to replace another’s vehicle and yours or getting sued. It’ll ruin your day, if not the next several years of your life.
Who offers the best auto insurance for the military?
This remains to be seen, as it varies by person. You’re a service member, but that’s only a single factor in the laundry list of risk-based factors that make up your profile. Age counts a whole lot, as does location. Further factors include your driving record, insurance tenure and history, credit profile, and more.
In many states, USAA offers the most affordable insurance rates on the market. That certainly explains their rampant popularity when it comes to military auto insurance, but that’s not the case across the board. On average, here’s what you might expect to pay based on where you live:

In Conclusion: Compare Military Auto Insurance
The military is defined by its coherent structure, whereas the insurance industry – and the claims process in particular – is rife with chaos. Finding cheap insurance is easy. Finding the right insurance for you can take a little more work. Read more about finding cheap auto insurance as a veteran.
Call around and see who you like to deal with. After all, in the event of a claim or an emergency, these are the people you’ll be dealing with. They’ll be responsible for handling your repair or replacement, finding you a rental vehicle, handling your total loss settlement, and maybe even hiring attorneys in the direst of instances.
Your business – just like your service to your country – is valuable and worthy of being appreciated. As a member of the armed forces, you understand the need to be coolheaded under pressure and the value of patience in the face of a difficult situation. Look for the same traits as you scour those quotes.
Paying for insurance can feel like watching money wastefully disappear, but a single claim changes all that. Finding the right coverage now can avoid a headache later. Check every place you can, but don’t settle until you find the best fit for you.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is USAA auto insurance really cheaper?
Oftentimes it really is. USAA specializes in military insurance, offering its services to service members and their widows, spouses, and dependents. By keeping their pool of customers smaller, they keep their prices a little lower. They won’t always be the cheapest though, so gather quotes.
What insurance is best for military personnel?
There’s no single broad-stroke answer. USAA and State Farm are among the most popular auto insurance companies for military personnel. AARP partnered with The Hartford to offer discounted veteran auto insurance, but the market is consistently competitive. Every insurer out there wants to earn your business.
Do military personnel get cheaper auto insurance?
AARP offers a veteran-specific policy that’s discounted. Beyond that, many insurers now offer discounts for active service members when deployed. On top of that, you could possibly qualify for the other discounts generally available to everyone.
Does Allstate offer a military discount?
They do, though not with as wide a range as other carriers. Still, it’s worth grabbing a quote and seeing what they can offer.
Does Progressive give a military discount?
As of the most recent updates, they don’t offer any military discounts outside of Louisiana. However, they are a competitive carrier when it comes to price, so they may still have a great rate to present. Ask for a quote to learn more.
